Foundation and Collaboration with Böhler
Stén & Co Oy Ab is a Finnish family-owned company that has been deeply rooted in Finland’s industrial landscape for nine decades. The company was founded in 1932 by engineer Artur Stén, who began operations as an importer of steel and industrial machinery in Helsinki. From the very beginning, the Stén Group has maintained close cooperation with the Austrian steel manufacturer Gebr. Böhler & Co AG, which continues to be a key supplier to this day.
Challenges and Expansion
The early years of the company were filled with challenges. Despite this, Stén & Co managed not only to maintain its position in the market but also to grow and expand its operations. During the post-war recovery period, the company broadened its range of steel products.
Establishment of the Muurame Hardening Plant
In the 1980s, Stén & Co focused increasingly on specialty and tool steels, reflecting global trends and responding to the industrial demand for more precise and durable materials. The establishment of the Muurame hardening plant in 1981 marked a significant milestone in the company's development, offering heat treatment services that were rare in Finland at the time.
Acquisitions and the Baltic Market
The company expanded into the Baltic markets, particularly Estonia, where it has been serving the industrial sector for two decades. Kimet Oy became part of the Stén Group through an acquisition, specializing in the supply of stainless steels, further strengthening the group’s position as a supplier to the industry. Other acquisitions have also been made to bolster the group's operations.
Relocation to Nurmijärvi
In 2011, the company moved to its current facilities in Nurmijärvi as part of its broader goal of reinforcing its position as Finland’s leading tool steel supplier. The new, modern facilities enabled more efficient production and improved customer service, helping to maintain Stén’s competitiveness in a challenging market.
The Future
The Stén Group has remained a family-owned business, passing its legacy from one generation to the next while combining tradition with modern business strategies to ensure long-term success. Stén & Co Oy Ab not only honors the legacy of its founder but also builds upon it to prepare for future challenges. Over the decades, the Stén Group's size and revenue have grown significantly. This growth has necessitated structural changes within the group to align with its expanded operations.
